The vehicle now protected with the "Dashcam Defense": a 2018 Tesla Model 3!

BlackVue is the best brand of dashcam we recommend for the newest all-electric car from Tesla.

Looking at this custom-wrapped beauty from the front, you can barely make out the 750 front-facing camera that is attached to the windshield. Tesla prides itself on being state of the art for comfort, safety and efficiency. We feel that adding the BlackVue DR750S-2CH system to this vehicle only raises the bar that much higher.

Here is a closer look at the DR750S main body (the forward-facing camera unit) in place. Even from 15 feet closer to the vehicle, you can barely detect that there is an aftermarket dashcam installed.

From the passenger's side window, you get a fantastic look at the interior of the Model 3. You will notice how the dashcam blends in beautifully to the very minimal layout of this Tesla.

While sitting in the passenger’s seat, you can see how unobtrusive the front-facing camera is. Our technicians have placed it discreetly behind the rear-view mirror, so it will not take your attention away from the control screen or the road ahead.

This view, as if you were looking at the rear-view mirror, shows how small and easily hidden the rear-facing camera is. It still gives the ideal point of view to watch your back, both while driving on the road or just parked at work.

Looking at the rear glass from the outside, the rear camera is invisible to the eye. One of the more unique things about Tesla cars is the continuous glass. The look of one piece of glass from the hood back to the trunk lid. You would think it would be difficult to hide something on that big a field of glass. But the techs here at The Dashcam Store have seen that movie before, and the rear camera disappears into the tint and defroster.

Even from directly behind the vehicle, the rear-facing camera is practically invisible from outside the car. The sleek and discreet design of the BlackVue DR750S-2CH is proven once again.

Here we've added an arrow to indicate exactly where the rear camera sits in relation to the rear glass. If you look closely, you may be able to see the outline of the camera.

From the driver's seat (the cockpit), you hardly notice the front camera under the rear-view mirror. All the driver’s attention is where is should be, on the road in front of them.

Here we are revealing a bit of technical details of the installation on this Model 3. Since the Model 3 does not have a traditional fuse box like the vast majority of other vehicles, it's not possible to utilize our non-invasive "add-a-circuit" fuse taps to connect the B-124 input power wire to vehicle power. Therefore, our technicians have utlized two Posi-tap™ connectors to make safe and secure connections to power and ground of the Model 3. The Posi-tap connectors are easily removeable, leave very little trace, and are absolutely the "next best thing" after our fuse taps.

The switched-power circuit utilized in this installation is for the 12v accessory power outlet (the "cigarette lighter" socket) that is located in the center console of the Model 3. Since this power outlet turns on and off with the ignition, and since it's a non-critical circuit (e.g. not a circuit used for climate control, airbags, etc), it is ideal for use in charging the B-124 battery pack while the Model 3 is being driven. Using this "switched" circuit for the B-124 also avoids any potential issues or warning messages you may see from having a device continuously drawing power from the Model 3 while it is parked and "turned off".

With this setup, the B-124 battery pack provides power to the dashcam when the Model 3 is not being driven, so the BlackVue dashcam can operate in "parking mode". When the Model 3 is driven again, the battery pack will then charge back up, always ready to keep watch again over the Tesla, be it overnight or during a work shift.

Below we have identified the exact power and ground wires that connect to the 12v accessory power outlet in the Model 3 center console. The solid black and black/white wires coming off the top of the Posi-tap connectors lead down to the the B-124 itself, which is located further up towards the front of the Model 3 (see next image). Please keep in mind changes in the automotive world, and particularly with Tesla vehicles, come at a rapid pace, therefore it's always best to verify this type of circuit in your own vehicle. When in doubt, always consult a professional!

In the direct center of the frame, you can see one side of the B-124 Battery Pack. There is a perfect gap between the floor of the Model 3 and the climate control equipment where the B-124 will sit securely.

The techs here in Austin were very excited to install a BlackVue system in a Model 3 by Tesla. We have had the privilege of working on some very high-end vehicles, but very few of them have had the buzz that the Model 3 does. Having seen this Model 3 up close and personal, we can say that it did not disappoint at all.
